Gerald (“Jerry”) Roughton established RJ Industrial in 1984. Jerry was no stranger to the scrap iron business. From 1974 through 1984, prior to establishing RJ Industrial, he was a partner of Oakland Iron & Metal in Pontiac, Michigan. RJ Industrial soon became one of the most elite portable processors of scrap iron and metal in the United States.

In 1988, Goodyear awarded RJ Industrial our first interior demo plant tear-out at the plant in Jackson, Michigan. In the same year, Jackson Iron & Metal contracted RJ Industrial for continued service work, later purchased by OmniSource Corporation, a subsidiary of Steel Dynamics Inc.

In 1995, our experience expanded as we continued service work for OmniSource. Jackson Iron & Metal Co. awarded RJ Industrial our second interior demo plant tear-out located at the GM Willow Run Assembly Plant. That project spring boarded us into 1998 with our next two interior demo tear-outs for the Navistar Corporation located in Indianapolis, Indiana and Chicago, Illinois. This led to our second service contract, again for OmniSource, in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The service work of RJ Industrial’s business had taken off from 1999-2003. We started cutting all over the country with multiple contracts, including train derailments, larger scale demo tear-outs, coal mining work and locomotive dismantling. By 2005, we specialized in purchasing and removing stamping presses all over Michigan.

RJ Industrial purchased our first scrap recycling facility in 2005, located on Dort Highway in Flint, Michigan. The 5.5-acre facility currently operates as a full service scrap and processing yard, including heavy offloading capabilities. Since then, RJ Industrial has added another scrap yard to our family with our Battle Creek, Michigan location.

Jason Roughton, the son of Jerry Roughton, acquired ownership in July 2009 and is President and owner of RJ Industrial. Jason and his hardworking, dedicated employees continue to strive to have the best customer service while being the safest, most efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly processors of heavy scrap iron and metal in the industry.

For years, people recognized us by our mascot, the Scrap Rat. Since, we have evolved into a multi-faceted company that can service all of your metal recycling needs. As such, we have evolved our name to RJ Industrial, the parent company to all of our subsidiaries under the RJ Industrial name.
